1099 Forms › Form 1099-R Changes for the 2026 Tax Year

At a Glance
For the 2026 tax year, the IRS is adding two new boxes to Form 1099-R: box 7c (Trump Account checkbox) and box 7d (Earnings on Excess Contributions). Box 7c is checked when the distribution is from a Trump account, and box 7d breaks out the earnings on distributed excess Trump account contributions that are already included in the box 1 gross distribution.

IRS Updates: Explaining Form 1099-R Changes for Processing Year 2027

The IRS recommends e-filing Form 1099 for quicker processing. Get started with an that supports e-filing 1099 Forms with Federal and State agencies. BoomTax will distribute your form copies via Postal Mail and Online Access.

For the 2026 tax year, Form 1099-R gains two new boxes for distributions from Trump accounts. Plan administrators and payers completing the form for 2026 distributions will need to identify Trump account distributions and, where applicable, the earnings on distributed excess contributions.

New Box 7c: Trump Account Checkbox

Enter an “X” in the box 7c checkbox if the distribution is from a Trump account. The checkbox sits alongside the existing box 7 distribution code(s) and the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE checkbox, flagging the account type for the recipient and the IRS.

New Box 7d: Earnings on Excess Contributions

Box 7d reports the total earnings on the amount of excess contributions distributed from a Trump account that is entered in box 1. The rules for completing it:

  • The distributed excess contributions and their earnings remain part of the box 1 gross distribution — box 7d identifies the earnings portion, it is not a separate payment.
  • Enter -0- (zero) if there are losses on the amount of excess contributions distributed from a Trump account that is entered in box 1.

The 1099-R covers the distribution side of Trump accounts only. The contribution side is reported by account trustees on the new Form 5498-TA, which also debuts for the 2026 tax year.

Filing the New Boxes Electronically

BoomTax supports the new boxes across every intake method — manual entry, spreadsheet import, and bulk file upload — and files Form 1099-R through the IRS IRIS system. Trustees handling the contribution side can also e-file Form 5498-TA online through IRIS, the only filing channel that form supports.

If your systems generate legacy FIRE 1220 flat files, note that the IRS is not maintaining the 1220 format going forward, so boxes 7c and 7d have no official 1220 positions. BoomTax publishes an extended 1220 layout for 1099-R boxes 7c and 7d so flat-file processes can carry the new data without a rewrite.
