Common questions

FIRE to IRIS converter FAQ

Can I convert a 1099 FIRE file to IRIS XML online?

Yes. This free browser-based FIRE to IRIS converter reads supported TY2026 IRS FIRE files, maps their fixed-width records to IRIS XML, checks the generated file against the complete TY2026 IRIS intake format, and enables a local XML download.

Does the downloaded XML count as an IRIS filing?

No. The converter creates a local XML download. Filing through IRIS is a separate process that requires an A2A TCC, approved access, authentication, transmission, and IRS acknowledgment handling.

Does BoomTax receive my file during conversion?

No. The converter reads the selected FIRE file and creates XML in your browser. The tax file, generated XML, filename, TINs, names, and amounts are not sent to BoomTax by the converter.

What does this TY2026 release support?

This release accepts 2026 tax data in the legacy TY2025 Publication 1220 layout and creates TY2026 IRIS XML. It supports original domestic returns for 31 Publication 1220 types: Forms 1097-BTC; 1098, 1098-C, 1098-E, 1098-F, 1098-Q, and 1098-T; 1099-A, 1099-B, 1099-C, 1099-CAP, 1099-DIV, 1099-G, 1099-INT, 1099-K, 1099-LS, 1099-MISC, 1099-NEC, 1099-OID, 1099-PATR, 1099-Q, 1099-R, 1099-S, 1099-SA, and 1099-SB; Forms 3921 and 3922; Forms 5498, 5498-ESA, and 5498-SA; and Form W-2G. It also supports valid CF/SF coding and reconciled K records for eligible forms. New TY2026 fields absent from FIRE require review: 1099-NEC tips and overtime, the 1099-S cash and digital-asset breakdown, and the required 1099-R Trump-account indicator (0 is a preview placeholder). Other unmappable records are stopped.

What does the IRIS format check cover?

The generated document is checked against the complete TY2026 IRIS intake schema package, the technical XSD files published for IRIS. This checks XML structure and data formats. It does not verify the accuracy of the tax data or guarantee IRS acceptance.

How are individual recipient names handled?

Publication 1220 preserves payee name lines, but not dependable first- and last-name boundaries. The converter preserves those lines in the XML business-name branch and adds a warning when the FIRE TIN type is individual. Review that identity mapping before using the data in a filing workflow.

How are transmitter and payer TIN types handled?

Publication 1220 does not carry transmitter or payer TIN types. The converter preserves each TIN and name, emits the corresponding IRIS TIN type as UNKNOWN, and adds a review warning instead of inferring an EIN, SSN, ITIN, or ATIN.
